Despite area school closures, more than 200 area high school and college students gathered at five Metropolitan Community College locations to compete in the Metro Omaha Trades Invitational (MOTI).

“That shows commitment, dedication and a genuine passion,” said Josh Gear, communication and community outreach strategist for Lozier, a platinum event sponsor. “That’s something every employer here looks for in a professional.”

Students competed in 22 events across creative arts and design, information technology, and skilled trades and technical sciences.

On the Fort Omaha Campus, MCC Construction Technology Instructor Ryan Schafer designed the Carpentry–Residential Framing challenge. While the frame — complete with a window — appears straightforward, Schafer said it tests more than basic construction skills.

“What we’re really trying to see is if they can read the plans,” he said. “There are a few details that, if they’re not paying attention, will trip them up.”

Challenges like these highlight the depth of knowledge and hands-on skills being developed by the region’s next workforce.

Students were scored on their projects, with winners announced at the South Omaha Campus following a luncheon and meet-and-greet with industry partners. Nearly 100 students qualified to advance and represent MCC at to the SkillsUSA Nebraska Championships in Grand Island this April.
